My Cathedral story began in 1999. What started out as a summer job changed my life.  While attending Mount Saint Vincent University, in the Tourism and Hospitality program, I took a student co-op position as a tour guide at Saint Mary’s Basilica. Though I was born and baptized Catholic, I had not practiced while growing up.  Working at the church opened my eyes to what I was missing.

While giving the daily tours I started to notice the people who came in every day to pray. Some of these people had absolutely nothing: no job, no money, no roof over their head...but they did have faith. And that faith got them through the day and encouraged them to go on. I came to realize that there had to be something to that, and it led me on a journey with my own faith. I registered in the RCIA classes at the Cathedral and was confirmed there at the Easter Vigil in 2000. I joined the Catholic young adult group at the Cathedral and participated in their social outreach activities. I made friends that are like family to me now, and also met my husband. We were married at the Cathedral and now have four beautiful children. We are still parishioners here and our kids have had all of their baptisms, first communions and confirmations at the Cathedral. I assist with the catechism classes and children’s liturgy.

The Basilica is a permanent fixture in my life, and I am so grateful for everything that came out of that summer job twenty years ago.
