An architectural icon in the heart of Halifax
With its granite spire rising nearly 200 feet into the city skyline, Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica landmark has long been a living embodiment of the arts, culture and heritage of our city. Today, we are the caretakers of this magnificent house of art and architecture, music and worship. Today, it is up to us to ensure Saint Mary’s continues to welcome visitors and Nova Scotians of all faiths.
“ In less than a year, we already feel that we have been woven into the 200-year tapestry of the Basilica. “
- Denver & Supriya
Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica has welcomed and supported parishioners, community members and visitors to the city for more than 200 years. Many thousands have celebrated life’s most important ceremonies here, weddings and baptisms, funerals and memorial services. Some of them have been kind enough to share those experiences with us; these are some of their stories.
Archbishop Dunn’s Message
“It is my honour and privilege to begin my ministry as Archbishop of Halifax Yarmouth in a year that marks the 200thAnniversary of the magnificent Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. As a major icon in the skyline of our community, the Basilica stands as a testament of strength, love and endurance, a place where all are welcome. As our Mother Church, the Basilica provides an incredible witness to the history of not only our Diocese but just as importantly, of our City, of our Province and of our Country. The work of the Foundation to rejuvenate this wonderful Church is important and timely as we try to ensure that our Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica can be an integral part of life for generations to come. I invite you to come visit, witness the incredible beauty of the Basilica, feel its warmth and grandeur and experience the richness of its history. We are blessed to have the Basilica in our lives.”
